How to build a digital tower in the NAS
Digital towers are a camera-based solution specifically designed for air traffic control (ATC). They provide ATC-grade video visualization of the runway along with tools and functionality that support ATC operations and enhance situational awareness. High dynamic range cameras provide a clear, detailed panoramic view under all weather and light conditions, and ATC-grade PTZ cameras allow for specific, zoomed-in views to enhance situational awareness. The crystal-clear displays replicate the traditional out-the-window (OTW) view. 


This document provides a high-level outline of the components an airport will require when deploying a digital tower solution to support the airfield functionality and the operations room in a single runway configuration. There are three subsystems to be addressed – camera, core processing and switching platform, visualization and ATC operations platform.
The components listed are those that will be required within the system design approval (SDA) from the FAA.

Developed in close operation with air traffic controllers (ATCOs), the solution complies to highest ATC standards and regulations and is the first visual surveillance system supported by a safety case. Key features include the capability of providing ATC services from any facility by replicating the out-the-window (OTW) view of the airspace, Airfield Operation Area (AOA), and the adjacent airspace with a 360-degree camera array and optional distributed cameras. The 360-degree video surveillance of the airport/airfield provides the ability to detect and display all aircraft, with or without operating transponders.
